Marathon Training Update Vlog

I'm the little guest post queen today:)  Please go check them out:
A post on conquering my running weakness  (hills & speed -Yikes)
& one on controlling a sweet tooth (which is my constant healthy eating battle)

Marathon Training Update
(Notice how awesome I look, no makeup nasty sweaty workout hair - Keeping it real for you all.
Rough start, but I'm doing it.  Not clicking as well as I hoped it would.
Coming back from so much time off is tricky.

Do you have a race coming up?  If so what are you training for and how is it going?
What do you do to stay motivated when it isn't going as well as you had hoped/planned?

  1. Don't jump up the mileage too quickly! You should only add about 10% per week, so if your total mileage for one week is 20 miles, your next week should be 22 miles. Build slowly. Be patient! You will get there! Do some core work/planks to strengthen your core too!I have a 50K in August, a 24 hour ultra run in September, a 50K in Oct and a 50 mile in Nov! Adaptability in training is key! When I have an off day, I adjust accordingly. Don't push too hard when you are tired, When you're tired, your form suffers. When you run hard with bad form you can get injured. Don't obsess over an off day!

    1. Thanks Gene. I just started incorporating in some core & strength work. Had never done it before so hopefully that will help. I will try to be patient (not always my strong suit).
50 miler. Wow. That is amazing!

    1. Thanks, it is great to hear from everyone that I should just relax about it. I think that being such a planner if my training plan doesn't go perfectly I worry too much.

  4. The start of marathon training really sucks. I felt like I was a lot slower than I should be when I started my current training plan, but now I'm about 7 weeks in and I finally feel like I'm starting to get in a groove. I think your body just takes a few weeks to get back into the hard training. Maybe try signing up for a race to get yourself in the racing mindset, or even just volunteer at one. Racing is always incredibly motivating for me.

Good luck! We'll be rooting for you.

    1. Maybe you are right and my groove will come back soon. I like your race idea too. Looking some up tonight.

  5. Sorry it was a discouraging week... marathon training is intense! As Gene said, I would back off a little and not follow the plan strictly until you have worked your way back up to that # of overall weekly miles... it would not be fun to re-injure yourself by ramping up too quickly (been there, unfortunately). But you'll get there!

  7. You'll get it back, just be patient and consistent - I know how you're feeling! :) I'm feeling like I'm a little crazy to be ramping up my training mileage at the same time as acclimating to the elevation at our new home, but I think all us runners have to be a *little* crazy!

  8. I just realised we're on a similar marathon time schedule - awesome. It looks like you're getting there though, bit by bit!

It also sounds like you're in the perfect position to listen to your body and run well - no more injuries that require 3 months off huh?!

I like what Beth said - do you have a few shorter races coming up?

  9. You can do it!! Sounds like your week was a bit discouraging, but you will get there! Training for a marathon is a huge accomplishment in itself -- if you polled 100 people on the street maybe 5 would say they've ran or trained for a marathon!!

When things aren't going well I remind myself that I'm still moving faster and farther than everyone who is still sitting on their couch.

    1. That is what I am trying to do. Just remind myself this is a big undertaking and not everything will go as planned, but that I need to stay positive.
